REVIEW OF THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE (2017)

The Zookeeper’s Wife is an upcoming 2017 British-American war drama movie directed by Niki Caro and written by Angela Workman, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Diane Ackerman. The movie stars Jessica Chastain, Johan Heldenbergh, Michael McElhatton, and Daniel Brühl.

The movie is scheduled to be released on March 31, 2017, by Focus Features.

The time is 1939 and the place is Poland, a homeland of Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski. The Warsaw Zoo flourishes under Jan’s stewardship and Antonina’s care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and put into action plans to save the lives of hundreds from what has become the Warsaw Ghetto.

The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.

The story of zookeeper’s wife taken from Diane Ackerman book with the same title and Diane Ackerman is an American poet, essayist, and naturalist known for her wide-ranging curiosity and poetic explorations of the natural world.

In September 2010, it was declared that Angela Workman was adapting the Diane Ackerman’s non-fiction book The Zookeeper’s Wife. On April 30, 2013, Jessica Chastain attached to play the titular role as Antonina Żabińska in the movie, while Niki Caro signed on to direct the movie. On August 24, 2015, Focus Features acquired the US rights to the film, and Daniel Brühl and Johan Heldenbergh signed on to star in the movie.
