David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike in A United Kingdom (2017)

A United Kingdom is a British biographical romantic drama movie directed by Amma Asante and starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike. The screenplay, by Guy Hibbert, is based on the true-life romance between Sir Seretse Khama and his wife Ruth Williams Khama.

It was screened at the 2016 Toronto International movie Festival and was the opening movie at the 60th London Film Festival, the second year in a row that a British film featured.

A UNITED KINGDOM is based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana.

The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2016. It will also screen at the BFI London Film Festival on 6 October 2016.Shortly after, Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired U.S distribution rights to the movie. The movie was released in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2016. It was scheduled to be released in the United States on 17 February 2017 but was pushed up to 10 February.
